Bricklayers hit the bigtime twice during their half
century on the US club soccer scene - but could
never win it all, In 1928 they held the New York
Nationals to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the US
Open Cup Finals, but lost the second leg 0-3
in the friendly confines of Soldier Field.
After crushing St. Louis superclub
Ben Millers in the 1931 semifinals,
they drew the Fall River Marksmen
in the final. In what would be the
last series of matches for Sam
Mark’s Mass. men, World Cup
hero Bert Patenaude demolished
the Chicagoans and USMNT mate
Alex Wood with six goals in the
three game series. Bricklayers did
not reach the Cup finals again, but
mortared Ilinois opponents until 1947.
