The Chicago Cats leapt into the second ASL -
and an American soccer mecca - in 1974.
They played in historic 10,000 seat Hanson
Stadium, a venue graced by the likes of
Cruz Azul, Napoli, 1860 Munich,
Kaiserslaoutern and US Open Cup
Finals since the 1940s. In 1973, Pele’
himself scored two as Santos
downed Lazio 4-1 in front of an
overflow Hanson crowd of 12,000.
In 1976, The Cats hosted Polish club
GKS Tychy and gained a respectable
1-3 result against the UEFA Cup
bound team.
That was the last year of the Cats
- but Hanson Stadium remains.
