Philadelphia possesses a rare gem: A
club that can claim almost a century of
history. The United German Hungarians
can trace their roots back to 1922 and the
Banater Athletic Club. By 1926 the club
formed a reserve squad, purchased
their own field, and began to travel
regionally. In 1927 they joined the
second division in the NSLP and in
1928 earned promotion to D1 -
a rare feat in US club sports.
Since then, scores of US leagues
and dozens of teams have been
founded and folded. The German
Hungarians persevered, notching
US Open Cup finals appearances
in 1977 and 1993.
